Why Denver-metro homes outgrow their panels

A huge share of the housing stock in Lakewood, Wheat Ridge, Arvada and central Denver was built between the 1950s and the 1980s, when a 100-amp service — sometimes 60 — was plenty. It isn't anymore. Central air conditioning, induction ranges, heat pump water heaters, hot tubs and Level 2 EV chargers have pushed household demand far past what those original services were designed to carry. The symptoms are familiar: breakers that trip when two big appliances run at once, a panel with no open slots, lights that dim when the A/C kicks on. A modern 200-amp panel doesn't just stop the nuisance tripping — it's the foundation that makes every future upgrade possible.

Federal Pacific and Zinsco: replace, don't wait

Two panel brands deserve special mention because the Denver metro is full of them. Federal Pacific (FPE Stab-Lok) and Zinsco panels were installed by the thousands here through the 1960s–80s, and both have well-documented failure modes: breakers that don't trip under fault conditions, overheating bus bars, and connections that degrade with age. Many insurance carriers now surcharge or decline homes that still have them. Aluminum branch wiring, handled correctly

Homes built or expanded from the mid-1960s to mid-1970s — common in Wheat Ridge, Lakewood and Arvada — often carry aluminum branch-circuit wiring. Aluminum itself isn't the problem; the connections are. Aluminum expands, contracts and oxidizes at terminations, which loosens connections over time and creates heat. The correct fix is remediation at every device, splice and junction with approved connectors, or targeted rewiring where it makes sense. We do this methodically and to code, and we're honest about scope: many homes need remediation, not a full rewire.

What a panel upgrade includes — and costs

A proper upgrade is more than swapping a box. We evaluate your service entrance and meter, coordinate with Xcel Energy where the utility side is involved, install the new panel with correctly sized breakers, label every circuit, add code-required grounding and bonding, and often include whole-home surge protection while the panel is open — it's the cheapest time to add it. Every job depends on amperage, service-entrance condition, and permit scope. Every job is permitted and inspected, and you get the full itemized number before we start.

Code compliance is the whole point

Panel work is exactly where you want a licensed contractor, not a handyman. Current NEC code has specific requirements for working clearances, grounding electrodes, AFCI and GFCI protection, and surge protection on service upgrades — and Denver-metro inspectors check all of it.
